Impacts of Organizational Behavior on Emotions and Mood

What is Organizational behavior?

Organizational Behavior

“Organizational behavior is the academic study of how people interact within groups. The principles of the study of organizational behavior are applied primarily in attempts to make the business operate more effectively.”

Organizational behavior plays an important role when it comes to working in a company. You should know that it is going to change the way things work, it is going to affect your mental health (positively or negatively) depending on how the company treats you, it will create diversity in your life, thoughts and might change your perspective toward certain things.

How do Emotions and Moods impact Organizational Behavior?

Since it is an applied behavioral science that is built on different disciplines which include mostly psychology and social psychology but if we break down these disciplines we get to know some of the major issues that sometimes affect organizational behavior.

However, there are so many disciplines of organizational behavior that need to be acknowledged but first and foremost is Emotion and Mood! Because it will certainly lead you to the other aspects of organizational behavior. And it is important to talk about your emotions and not to suppress them. It can cause damage. But sadly in a society where none is ready to acknowledge this issue, everyone suffers.

I don’t understand why we had to make it a big deal to talk about your emotions and mood at the workplace when it’s pretty much clear that the workplace is one of the reasons that impacts your emotional processing and yet it’s still a taboo.

*According to Mark Twain; “Time cools, time clarifies; no mood can be

maintained quite unaltered through the course of hours.”

Emotion plays an important part in how you behave at your job, home, or anywhere in general. But unfortunately, you are not allowed to show your emotions, especially at the workplace which makes it hard to be emotionally stable at all.

For instance, let’s talk about the change you feel in yourself after joining an organization or a company. It can be a good change or a bad change depending on the environment of your workplace. Most of the people who start working for the first time, don’t have a single clue about how they are going to be treated or how they should behave in a working environment. And when you lack knowledge mainly about organizational behavior you start developing major changes in your personality and those changes sometimes affect you negatively.

There are times when you can’t be emotionally stable or available yet you still have to wake up and go to work, you can’t take some time off just because you’re not feeling yourself. And that makes everything difficult, including your job. But hello, work comes first and you have no choice because your boss or organization needs a certain task to be done!

Emotions and moods affect your performance and your attitude towards work. So is it okay if we say, this might be the root cause of other issues related to organizational behavior? Since we are open about some of the major issues one can face most probably, we can definitely work on finding solutions too. But for that, we should look up some of the industry’s best practices and see why some organizations around the globe are so successful.

Practices that every organization should follow!

As the organization grows it needs to adapt to new circumstances and it has to experiment with different ways of working to see what suits it better.

Suppose you own an organization, which practices would you consider best that can benefit your organization? Here are the options to improve your performance in the market.

  • Improve your management
  • Improve sales and marketing techniques
  • Improve your business operations
  • Gets innovative
  • Encourage different ideas and point of views
  • Use IT
  • On a lighter note “Learn Organizational Behavior”

These practices will not only improve your status in a competitive market but you can create a positive change at the workplace. However, the last practice was not included anywhere in benchmarking techniques but if we think about it then it should have been included long ago because employees are the asset to any organization, and most of the time they are the ones who completely took all the pressure on their shoulders.

Companies that treat their employees the way they should be treated

  • Cisco offers benefits that focus on family so you can manage parenthood with your job!
  • Salesforce has an open communication culture and helps their people feel good by giving back to the community.
  • Abbott supports their employees through challenging financial crises and focuses on diversity inclusion at the workplace.

How to improvise?

These are some of the recommendations I’d like to mention for the betterment of organizational behavior.

  • We should really start taking the mental health issue seriously and should have all the rights to discuss it in the workplace. A healthy discussion won’t harm anyone.
  • Everyone should practice ethics more often.
  • Every opinion matters even if it comes from someone who is less experienced than you. Therefore, you should listen to each and every employee.
  • We should stop this bullying culture for once and all.
  • It’s high time to accept that Emotions and Moods do affect your job and organization as well as they affect your personal life.
Conclusion

The sole purpose of this article is to throw light on some of the major issues almost everyone faces once or throughout their life but the main thing is to see if we are able to provide solutions and recommendations to create a positive change and better environment in the workplace so that no individual or a group ever feels mental or emotional stress.

You can never find a solution until or unless you start acknowledging your problems. Therefore, we should stop refusing and ignoring the fact that just like any other discipline of organizational behavior Emotions and Mood do affect your overall performance in any organization.
